Lover's Quarrel (Part 2)
‘’These notes were compiled by Deputy Dell of Brimstone.’’
Last session, myself (Dell Gunnarson) and 4 others arrive in a dusty town of Uriel. Tearful and frightened townsfolk watch us with belligerred hope and fear as we settle into the town. It seems that something bad was going on here. Turns out a group of Ex Confederates are holding the town hostage so to speak by using it as their own personal playpen. Of violence, theft, murder, debauchary, drunken acts and taking advantage of women. To name but a few.
This session we continue the adventure into the town of Uriel. As we try to deal with these Gray-Coats and put an end to their reign of tyranny. Once and for all.
Our group consists of Elijah, the somewhat cranky old man and crack shot. Who would do to ride the river with. Has a bit of a soft heart and gentle spot for children and women, but he would deny it. Next is Sammy Lions, an asshole, but amazingly skilled gunman. I just hope he doesn’t fall to the wrong side of the law. Sister Ann Xavier a Nun who is more than what she seems joins our motley posse as well.
As our crew is in the Doctor’s office dealing with the autopsy of the Marshal, John. Old Man Elijah walks into the Doctor’s office and joins us. Rufus & Lily having gone off to tend to their own needs, left the other three of us in the Doctor’s office. Sammy, Xavier Ann & Myself. Now of course joined by Elijah. After getting him up to speed, we spoke to the Doctor and continued with the examination & autopsy of the formal Marshal.
As the Doctor cut open the deceased, steam escaped from the body and all the internal organs were fried and charred. As if cooked over an open flame. But these aren’t any longhorn steaks. The doctor quickly excused himself to go wash his hands and recovered. Meanwhile I searched through the deceased man’s belongings. Not finding much. An old well worn bible that I couldn’t make heads or tails of.
But when Sister Xavier Ann read through the bible, something with her faith caused the Bible to burst into flames. I didn’t know what it was or why it did that. For I was busy pocketing the Marshal’s wedding ring to give back to the Widow before the posse leaves Uriel.
Sammy got some information about a man named Buck Travis, who resided inside Uriel. A muckraker who might have some information on the town and Gray-Cloak’s inhabiting it. But it’s been over 2 months since he’s published an article and rumors abound that he has gone to drink.
Once outside we all decide to venture to Maddie’s house, the Marshal’s widow and deliver onto her her dearly beloved wedding ring. But before we could go, the Doctor told us about 5 miner’s who died of strange heart failure. Warning us to stay out of the mines, for our own health.
We arrived at Maddies and gave her back her ring. After questioning her some and giving her back her ring. We find the mayor has left for business in Brimstone. But there is an expensive lawyer in town named Gilford. We discuss what to do and then split up for the evening. While the rest of the posse goes to find lodging for the night. While I decide to seek out the Lawyer for some information about the town.
Meeting with Gilford I get a written document naming myself marshal of Uriel and naming 3 Deputies, those being the rest of the Posse with me. With specific orders to rid this town of the Gray-Coats inhabiting it. Before bed however, Sister Xavier Ann goes to visit the Church. Learning something unholy has found its way into town.
I visited the doctor’s office and got the Marshal’s badge, deputies badge and fired him. Then went to the Town Jail and fed the two prisoners. Found 2 more badges for the rest of the posse and went to find some place to sleep.
The following morning, we woke up to the blazing sun. Going about our business, I found an old drunk sleeping outside of the Saloon. Learning his name James. I hired him to be the jail keeper. Going to see Lawyer Gilford to organize his pay and any other supplies he needs. Just billing it to the town..
Meeting up with the posse and passing out deputy badges to them all. We discuss heading to the abandoned houses to speak to the gray-cloaks in town and try and run them out. Finding two members outside of a house on the hill. Elijah & Myself doing the talking and trying to get them out of town. Telling them any still in town after noon get Shot, by Sammy that is. But we didn’t find anything else.
Around noon however we count 20 Gray-Coats heading outside of town. The leader, a skinny white guy gives us all a dirty look before leaving as they head out of town. Heading to the jail I gave the old Man, James a deputy badge. And release the two gray-coat prisoners. They decide to instead follow Sister Xavier Ann back to Brimstone. Either way the Gray-Coat situation was resolved.
Going to the Saloon, Elijah questions those inside about the marshal’s death. While we all followed. Bartender claiming the Sheriff died of sunstroke. Which we all knew was a lie. Elijah informs the rest of us when we meet up outside the Saloon, that the Bartender knows more than he’s letting on. So we decided to investigate some more.
Outside of the Uriel Gazetteer office we see a figure upstairs moving around. As soon as Sammy tries the front door, the figure freezes and runs away. I quickly rush to the back door to stop any attempted escape. But the bespectacled mustached haggard man inside, was the Muckraker. Greets us with a shotgun and terrified wary eyes. Ushering us inside, for this man was clearly frightened.
Once inside we learned the following from the Muckraker. The devil is in town and rules the streets and hearts of men and women. Then he sees all “clearly”. While he sounds crazy, he might not be wrong. Shows us a photograph of the Marshal and some other woman in the picture, them close together and small figures on the corner of the street. Something protruding like leathery wings from her back. And hair sprouts out. Couple of horns pierced back through the picture. Wearing a revealing high quality revealing sleek dress.
After telling us all he knew, the Muckraker falls dead from a heart attack right after showing us a picture he took. Claiming with his dying breath, “HUH! I KNEW IT!” While I attempted to cut open his torso and see if his innards were cooked. While Elijah and Sister Xavier Ann decided a much easier way of examining the corpse was better. Sister Xavier Ann reads the name Maria Delgado, before the letter bursts into flames. Upon uttering the name from Sister Xavier Ann, we all felt a chill run down our bones.
We come up with a plan to have Sammy Lions try to locate a woman matching Maria Delgado’s description. With the rest of us following in suit and Sister Ann convincing others to give up their sinful ways outside. A brunette approaches Sammy and tries to flirt with him, but he brushes her off awaiting the desired woman he wants. Sammy found a woman who had a good seductress attempt on him, but he was able to resist if not just barely. But this woman turned out to not be Maria. However, just uttering her name seems to have power within it.
I noticed the bartender Zeke was watching us very intently. Elijah went to kick out the Nun and help give us our cover intact. Meanwhile Sammy is intent on his mission while myself and Elijah stay inside the Saloon and watch over the gatherings. Sammy throws whiskey in the bartenders face for not serving him water in his usual asshole-like demeanor.
